Mke Money with Your Bike

Fun and Funky Ways to Make Extra Money

I have a confession to make: I’m always on the hunt for ways to make extra money.

I learned a long time ago that cutting expenses will only go so far–at some point, you need to focus on your efforts to bring in more cash. Being that I already have enough “serious” jobs to pay my bills each month, I’ve usually gone on missions to find fun, even funky, ways to bring in extra money so that I can boost my savings, take vacations, or even just have the peace of mind that I can find ways to infuse cash into the budget in case I’m ever in a pinch.

Here are two of the more fun ways I’ve made extra money in the past:

I’ve turned a hobby into an income stream by doing running tours around Boston.

I’ve been running for over 20 years, so it’s a pretty big part of how I identify myself. Last year, I was perusing options to join a new running club in the area when I stumbled upon an ad for running tour leaders. I was intrigued, so I found the company’s website and read more. Basically, people (usually tourists) pay to have someone run them around the city while they take in the sights and learn more about the area. The best part for me was that it ended up being paid training–I could train for my marathons and be paid what usually worked out to be around $30/hour.

If you’re looking to cash in on a hobby, start Googling now because my guess is that there’s certainly a way to make some extra money by doing what you love to do!

I’ve made extra money by making my bike work for me.

When I lived in Colorado, I not only biked and ran to work most days (I once snowboarded into town, too!), but I took a part-time job as a bike courier on the weekends to bring in some extra money when I first moved there. I didn’t do this for too long, but  I had a blast taking various letters and small packages from office to office. It was part of the company I already worked for so the payroll was easy and I loved seeing the boost in my paycheck.

No matter if you live in an urban area or a suburban area, bike couriers are in demand all over the world. You can do a quick search or you can build your own business by reaching out to the offices in your area.

Rules for taking on more work

If you’re contemplating the idea of turning a hobby into a way to make money, remember that there will be time and effort needed to be successful. You’ll also want to ensure that you won’t get burned out or start to dislike the hobby you once loved so much. Additionally, ensure that the extra time will fit comfortably into your life and schedule. If you find yourself tired, stressed or not wanting to do the work anymore, that could be a sign that it’s too much and is time to scale back. Pay attention to the signs of how you’re feeling so you’re able to both enjoy the activity AND making the money!

  4. Those are some great ways to make some extra money doing things you already enjoy. Sadly, there’s not much in the terms of history in Omaha that people would pay to run around and see. ;)

I’m all about using the things you already love to make extra cash. For me I try and curb my obsession with books by selling some and being a good yard sale scout for those books I know could bring in extra $$ online. It’s small amounts, but they add up so I don’t have to pay for textbooks and other random Amazon needs. Pretty sweet to me. Great post!
