Are You Paying Over the Odds for Your Car Insurance?

Is there anyone on the planet who doesn’t hate paying for car insurance? This is something we simply have to do if we want to carry on driving but that doesn’t make it fun.

However, there is something you can do about it. Instead of just sitting back and accepting expensive car insurance you can fight back and try to get something cheaper in the following ways.

Shop Around

The very first thought which should cross your mind when you have expensive car insurance is that it is time to see what the competition has to offer. There are now many different car insurance companies around and it is a good idea to see how much they quote you. You can do this online, so it is something which is quick and easy to do. Once you get a better quote than the price your current insurer is asking you for then you should go back to them and invite them to beat this alternative quote. You can save a lot of cash in very little time with this tactic so there is really no excuse for not giving it a go. You might feel some sort of loyalty to your current insurer if you have been with them for a number of years and they have always treated you well. However, if they are planning to charge you more than the premium you could find elsewhere then there is no better time to see how loyal they actually are to you and how much they value your custom.

Change Your Car

This might seem like a drastic step but it could be worth it. Simply put, some vehicles are more expensive to insure than others. This means that you could possibly switch to a similar car and save money on your policy. Generally speaking, smaller and less powerful cars offer better value when it comes to insurance rates, as well as being cheaper to run in other ways. If your current insurance premium is too high for you then it is a good idea to get quotes on a few vehicles you might be interested in switching to. You might even find that one of the vehicles you have always liked the look of has a better insurance rating than you would have thought.

Find Out About Discounts

It can be very easy to get a discount on your car insurance which you had never known about. Just ask your insurer what discounts are available and what the criteria is. It could be that you could save money without doing anything. Typically, you get offered a discount for having more than one policy with the company, for having better than standard car security fitted, for parking in a safe place or for any one of a number of other reasons. You might as well check it out and see whether there is a nice discount you could claim.

Check the Cover

The final point to consider is that you could be paying more for your cover than you need to. This is because the level of cover might no longer be suitable for your needs. There are a few different ways you can tweak your car insurance in order to reduce costs. Obviously you don’t want to leave yourself vulnerable to losing a lot of money by reducing the cover too far. However, you might think that you could live with, for example, a higher deductible on your policy. This is a point to consider carefully before going ahead but it could be worth it in the long run.

  1. Insurances can be cumbersome to study but I can only agree. There is no better way to benefit the most out of insurances, even for cars, than to be willing to painstakingly do comparisons, give each quote careful study to get the most of the cover and your money’s worth.

  2. We always shop around for car insurance but consistently have found that our current provider always is better than the rest. I think if you are with a good company for many years they will look after you well.

That’s great CBB. If you find an insurer who consistently gives you great premiums it makes life a litle bit easier

  3. My next door neighbor has a son who just got out of the Marines. The son has a lot of money saved up, is young, and unmarried. The son needs a car. Dad’s suggestion is a good used truck. The son’s suggestion is a brand new Nissan 370ZX. After looking at the different insurance costs for the two options, the son has another choice to make. Live at home with Mom and Dad or get his own place.

That brand new 370ZX looks great parked in the street in front of Mom and Dad’s house, now that he’s living there.

Thanks for the comments Richard. Young drivers have got it tough in terms of premium if they want to buy a great car

  4. This is one of the few advantages to living in New York City. Though it is ridiculously expensive, I don’t have any car expenses- gas, insurance, maintenance, etc.
